On December 3, 2024, martial law was declared. The former president who enacted the measure was impeached in April 2025, and a new president was elected in June of the same year. While Gwanghwamun Square and the National Assembly in Yeouido remain regular protest sites, new locations such as Hannam-daero and the street in front of the Constitutional Court have been added to the protest map.

Alongside time-tested protest tools including (electronic) candles, American and Korean flags, loudspeakers, trucks, plastic chairs, leaflets, and picket signs, new elements have emerged. Some participants now carry K-pop light sticks in place of candles or wear foil blankets. Israeli flags and citizen-designed flags have also made appearances. These additions, both symbolic and functional, have subtly altered the visual and spatial landscape of the city.

Unit 2 will document the tools, media, and spaces involved in events related to martial law, from late 2024 to the present. The documentation will be based on verifiable facts and avoid ideological interpretations or partisan claims.

Expected Outcome 

Unit 2 will compile photographs of events associated with martial law and interpret their spatial and symbolic elements through an archival lens. The documentation will include drawings, models, images, and written texts that portray the photographed spaces and objects. These materials will be presented as an ‘evidence board’ displayed on the studio wall and exhibited in their original arrangement.

 비상계엄

 2024년 12월 3일 비상계엄이 선포되었다. 계엄을 선포한 전 대통령은 2025년 4월 파면되었고, 같은 해 6월 새 대통령이 선출되었다. 광화문광장과 국회 앞은 여전히 단골 시위 장소이며 한남대로와 헌법재판소 앞 도로가 시위 장소로 새로 추가되었다. 한편 (전자) 촛불, 성조기와 태극기, 대형 스피커와 트럭, 플라스틱 의자, 다양한 리플렛과 피켓 등 시기와 무관하게 꾸준히 보이는 집기 외에 최근 시위에서 새로이 보이는 도구가 있었다. 촛불 중 일부는 아이돌 응원봉으로 대체되었고, 은박 담요를 뒤집어쓴 사람도 보였다. 이스라엘 국기뿐만 아니라 시민이 직접 디자인한 깃발도 등장했다. 이런 시위의 양상은 도시 모습에 크고 작은 영향을 주었다. 유닛 2는 2024년 말부터 현재까지 비상계엄과 관련하여 일어난 일련의 사건에서 그 도구와 매체, 공간을 인물과 이데올로기, 주장을 배제하고 객관적 사실에 기반하여 기록한다.

결과물

비상계엄 관련 사건 및 시위 사진을 수집하고, 그 사진의 공간과 물건을 아키비스트(archivist) 방식을 통해 도면, 모형, 이미지, 텍스트 등으로 기록하며 그 상징과 의미를 해석한다. 기록물은 제작과 동시에 수사 기관의 핀보드 형식으로 스튜디오의 벽면에 부착하고, 그대로 전시한다.
